英语教学：读精选外刊 学英文句型（4）

（1）一个强调句式

下面的句子节选自The Economist对于越南太阳能产业的报道Vietnam grapples with an unexpected surge in solar power

The surge is all the more surprising given the terms on offer from Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the cash-strapped state-owned enterprise that runs the national grid.

文章背景是越南政府为了促进太阳能产业的发展承诺在两年内为大型太阳能发电场提供补贴，这大大提升了该国的太阳能发电能力。节选的句子含义是：运营国家电网的越南电力公司是一家资金短缺的国企，鉴于其提供的条款，越南太阳能发电能力的快速增长更加令人感到意外。

这里有一个值得学习的句式：XX is all the more…given… 其中all the more是一个固定表达，意思是“更加”，用于对事物进行强调。使用该句式时需要在上下文中点明让事物变得更加不同寻常的原因，比如上文越南太阳能发电的快速增长之所以让人感到意外，是因为越南电力公司提供的补贴条款很苛刻。

XX is all the more…given…意思是“考虑到……情况，XX因此显得更为……”，我们可以使用该句型来强调事物的不同寻常，比如在谈及中国高铁的发展时可以说：

The Chinese high-speed railway network is the best in the world, exceeding 30,000 km in total length. This figure isall the moreimpressivegiventhat the country started its high-speed rail program only 15 years ago.

（2）一个开头句式

下面这个开头句选自The Economist关于电子支付的文章A penny here, a penny there

FINANCE, THE ADAGE goes, is the art of passing money from hand to hand until it finally disappears. This will ring true to anyone who has tried to send cash overseas and found their remittance whittled away by commissions and lousy exchange rates.

句子意思是：正如一句古老谚语所说，金融是将钱左手倒右手直到最后消失的艺术。对于任何尝试将现金转到海外并发现其汇款被佣金和过高汇率扣除大半的人来说，这句话对他们同样适用。

作者在开头第一句引用了一句关于金融的古老谚语，并自然引出下一句，指出这一谚语对于海外汇款的人也同样适用。这种引用名言来开头的方式值得我们学习。第二句中ring true是一个固定搭配，意思是“（说法或解释等）听起来真实”，如果要表达相反意思可以说ring hollow

我们可以学习这种开头方式，第一句先引用名人名言，第二句再引入要具体说明的事物，比如：

Steve Jobs once put it, "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work."This will ring true topeople who choose a job that they are really passionate about.

（3）对原因进行解释

下面句子选自The Economist文章Why young people in Britain aren’t moving job

Bobby Duffy, a former opinion pollster now at King’s College London, argues that the reduced job mobility of younger people is less about an attitudinal shift and more about a change in circumstances.

文章探讨了英国现今年轻人工作流动性减少的原因。上面句子的意思是：伦敦国王学院的鲍比·达菲之前是民意调查员。他认为，年轻人工作流动性的减少与其说是因为态度转变，不如说是因为大环境的变化。

从这里可以学到一个句型：XX is less about…and more about… 我们可以用该句型来表达“造成……的原因更多是因为……而不是因为……”，它在话题作文中有比较广泛的应用，比如对于工作满意度我们可以说：

Studies have shown that job satisfaction isless abouthigh salariesand more aboutpassion and personal growth.

（4）做……能够让人……

下面的开头句选自The Economist对于美国畜牧业的报道Business has gone sour in America’s dairy capital

To walk around Dan Wegmueller’s farm in southern Wisconsin is to conjure up the past. He says each of his 50 Brown Swiss cows—with white-tipped ears and bells clanging from their necks—has a name and distinct personality.

句子意思是：在丹·韦格米勒位于威斯康星州南部的农场中散步能让人回想起过去。他说，他的50头瑞士棕色奶牛（每头奶牛的耳尖都是白色的，脖子上还挂有叮当作响的铃铛）每头都有自己的名字和个性。

其中to…is to… 这一句型在地道英文中有着非常广的应用，它的意思相当于“做……能够让人……”，比如BBC对于巴西的报道中有这样一句话：

And to visit Brazil is to witness first hand the joy this sport brings to its people.

句子意思相当于：参观巴西能让人亲眼见证足球这项运动带给巴西人的乐趣。

又比如电影《悲惨世界》中有这样一句台词：

To love another person is to see the face of God. （心中有爱便与上帝同在）

我们在写作中也可以灵活应用这一句型，比如不少人很喜欢《哈利波特》，可以说：

To read the Harry Potter series is to enter a world of dreams and fantasies.
