为了使语言简洁，人们常把某些词省掉，这种现象称为省略。这种句子称为省略句。

1，有时句子本身意思很清楚了

I think we need it more than they（do). 我想我们比他们更需要它。

Sounds fine to me.听起来不错

2，有的依据上下文意思能省略而不影响意思的就不说了

Is Mary coming to the party? I am afraid not.

Are you determined to go? Unless my sisters don’t approve of it. 除非我姐妹们不同意

状语中也常常省略Look out for cars when (you are)crossing the street.

Her daughters were of some help ,however small. 她的女儿们总能帮些忙，尽管小忙。

3, As, than句中经常省略，只要不引起歧义，都可以

The situation there was not as bad as had been reported. 那里的局势并不像报道的那么糟。

We waited as calmly as we could.我们尽量冷静地等着。

Than, It is easier than i thought。

4, 一般来说在并列介词短语中，第一个介词相同的第二个介词常可省去

Our earth is full of sound because it is full of motion, like truchs rolling along the highway or (like) jets zooming into the sky.

He did not know about English or (about)Japanese.

在不同动词相同介词的并列短语动词中，可省略第一个介词，不同介词的话就不能省了

i have heard (about) and read about your stories.

I have listened to and thought about your story.

5,表示时间的名词短语前带有表示“大约的”about ，前面的介词往往省去。

Lily has been here with him (for )about 6 years.

I got up (at)about 6 o’clock.

6, I am not sure (of ) where to go. Be careful (as to ) how you do it.

(ON)what day did you arrive there?

The bridge was built (in)1997.

We walked (for) ten miles.

7, and 后有时跟一个名词，意思接近一个分句

They still have shortcomings, and (they are )very big ones too.他们有缺点，而且是很大的缺点。

8,下面句子中的this或that代表前面分句的意思，这类句子也接近省略句

You may put the meeting off and this only when it is absolutely necessary.你们可以把会议推迟，但只是在绝对必要时才能这么做。

句型的转换

一个同样的意思，常常有许多表达方法。

比如：他没有工作。

He has no job.

He is unemployed.

He is out of work.

He is jobless.

这主要靠词汇手段。还有一个办法是靠语法手段，主要是靠用不同的句型来表达同样的意思，例如下面三种结构都可以表示“你这样做是对的”

You are right to do that.

You are right in doing that.

It is right for you to do that.

不能说哪一种表达好，但知道较多说法可以丰富我们的语言，掌握更多表达方法。

我们举一些例子

主语的转换

His arrogant manner made everyone dislike him.

HIs arrogance made everyone dislike him.傲慢

Her late arrival delayed our meeting.

Her arriving late delayed our meeting.

Your denying it is useless. 动名词

It is useless for you to deny it.

The choice is up to you.

It’s up to you to choose.

His decision is to study abroad.

He decides to study abroad.

谓语的转换

These French books can be obtained at any library.

These French books are obtainable at any library.

She entered, accompanied by her mother 表伴随的过去分词

She entered in company with her mother.

He said he did it on purpose.

He said he did it purposely.

It worried her that her daughter should stay up so late.从句

Her daughter’s staying up so late worried her. 动名词
