Notes on the text

1. You needn"t be so rude about it. 你说话没必要这样不客气。

need可作普通动词，译为需要。也可作情态动词，通常以否定形式出现在句子中，译为没必要。

2. I sat down on one of those modern chairs with holes in it and waited. 我坐在一个新式的满是网眼儿的椅子上，等待着。

3. I regretted saying it almost at once. 我马上后悔说了这话。

regret doing: 后悔做了某事

regret to do: 为要去做的事感到遗憾

4. You needn"t have said that. 你没必要这么说。

need have done 表示本来用不着做某事，而实际上已经做了。

5. A man can never have too many ties. 男人有多少领带也不会嫌多。

Key structures

1.must和have to的区别

must表示一定要做，侧重于个人主观上的“必须”，have to表示不得不做，侧重客观上的“必须”。must可用来表示现在和将来的“必须”，无时态和人称的变化，have to则有更多的时态和人称的变化。

例句：It"s too late. I must go home at once.

She has to attend an important meeting this afternoon.

2. mustn"t和needn"t的区别

mustn"t表示禁止做某事（千万不要做）

needn"t 表示没有必要做某事（也可以选择去做）

例句： You mustn"t read in bed.It"s bad for your eyes.

You needn"t finish your soup if you don"t like it.

Special difficulties

observe: 1. 评论，同义词为remark

"We mustn"t buy things we don"t need,"I remarked/observed.

2. 注意到，同义词为notice
