一些常见的用来获取更多信息的方法是用疑问副词进行提问，如 when are we going，where are we going 或 why are we going；其中 when，where 和 why 是也三个常见的关系副词。

关系副词是指提供更多关于所讨论的人、地点或事物的信息的词。除此之外，关系副词还把从句和句子连接在一起，并且置于定语从句的开头，引导不同性质的定语从句，其中 when 在定语从句中作时间状语，where 作地点状语，why 作原因状语。

一、关系副词如何工作

关系副词用来引出从句，并把名词或代词与从句连接起来。

1. when 的意思是相当于 in which，但相比于 in which， when 稍显得没那么正式，用来告知一个动作发生的时间，例如：

The summer when I graduated from university was long and hot.

我大学毕业的那年夏天是漫长而炎热的。

The day when the concert takes place is Sunday.

音乐会举行的那天是星期天。

That’s the year when we got married.

那是我们结婚的一年。

2. where 的意思相当于 in which 或 at which，同理它们也比 where 稍微正式，用来告知句中主语的位置，例如：

We danced by the table where we could see the view.

我们在能看到风景的桌子旁跳舞。

The bar in Barcelona where I met my wife is still there.

我在巴塞罗那遇到我妻子的酒吧还在那里。

This is the garden where they took their photos.

这是他们拍照的花园。

但是有的时候合理使用 where，in which或 at which 才能表达更准确的意思，例如：

这是我在这遇见我朋友的商店。

a. This is the store where I met my friend.

b. This is the store at which I met my friend.

c. This is the store in which I met my friend.

解析：这三句还是有本质的区别，句a的意思显得比较含糊（在商店里面或在商店外面），而句b和句c的区别主要是 in 和 at 表地点时的区别，也就是商店里面与外面的区别。

3. why 的意思相当于 for which，它也比 why 稍微正式，用来提供关于某事发生的原因，例如：

Her mass of library of books is the reason why she’s sowell-spoken.

她藏书量大是她口才这么好的原因。
