B

I go to a gym in west London, always unwillingly. Exercise is too exhausting and boring. Always was. At school I made believe that I had headaches and parental notes too, to get out of PE classes and compulsory games.

Now, twice a week, I dutifully get on cycling machines and other equipment and make myself work out for an hour. To get through the difficult hour, I and people watched: young and old, fit and unfit and Clayton Rose, one of the instructors.

Clayton is a personal trainer not only to body perfectionists, but to people who are mentally and physically disabled, the obese and hopeless. He treats them all the same. I have witnessed him listening keenly to a middle-aged working-class woman who goes on and on about her life, holidays, everything.

Slim and attractive now, she was once so heavy that she was in a wheelchair. I have seen him calm down a young man with Tourette’s syndrome(抽动症) and get him on a treadmill. I have also watched him pushing and coaching strong, cool men.

Clayton was shocked when I said I wanted to write about him. “Why? You know I’m not educated? I’m not clued up about politics and all that. Just an ordinary guy.”

He grew up in Twickenham, where his dad worked in a timber yard, his mum in an office. After college, the young man got into personal training and found his work. One of his best friends got seriously ill and was given months to live.

Clayton put him on a program that kept him alive for almost five years: “I don’t earn much, but I love my work; training and talking really helps people who don’t have confidence, who are lonely, afraid and sick. Lots of people can’t step into a gym. They need someone they can trust, someone who will be on their side.”

The gym recently updated its equipment. The flashy new stuff confuses and upsets disabled customers. Me too. The private firm running these centers made decisions without considering these needs. Clayton is managing the chaos with grace and strength. Last week, when a young woman in a wheelchair started sobbing loudly, he calmed her down, restored her dignity, superhumanly contained his anger.

One of his colleagues thinks Clayton’s “a legend”. He is, and doesn’t know it — a rare thing in this age of extreme narcissism(自恋) and monetized everything.

24. Why was I unwilling to go to a gym?

A. Because I suffered from headaches.

B. Because I had bad memories of PE classes.

C. Because I had to watch a large crowd exercising

D. Because I felt it tiring and no fun

25. How does Clayton Rose help people in the gym?

A. He brings out the best in them.

B. He helps them with illness advice

C. He treats them differently.

D. He focuses on body perfection.

26. What does Clayton Rose like about his job?

A. The pay he receives

B. The grace and strength it brings.

C. The comforting power he gives.

D. The disabled people on his side.

27. What is the main idea of the text?

A. Reasons to go to a gym.

B. An instructor inspiring confidence.

C. Exercise with push and inspiration.

D. Rays of hope in the age of narcissism.

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.

In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know if the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer.

The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.

In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder(文件夹).

Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location(位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory(交互记忆)”.

According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date.

This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

32. The passage begins with two questions to ________.

A. introduce the main topic B. show the author’s attitude

C. describe how to use the Internet D. explain how to store information

33. What can we learn about the first experiment?

A. Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.

B. The two groups remembered the information equally well.

C. The first group did not try to remember the information.

D. The second group did not understand the information.

34. In transactive memory, people ________.

A. keep the information in mind

B. change the quantity of information

C. organize information like a computer

D. remember how to find the information

35. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research?

A. We are using memory differently.

B. We are becoming more intelligent.

C. We have poorer memories than before.

D. We need a better way to access information.

Steps to write a good essay

If you ask many people, they will probably say that writing a research paper is challenging. 36

Firstly, choose a topic that you are interested in or a topic you are curious about, which will motivate you to do the necessary research on it. Meanwhile, for helpful and reliable sources of information, the library is the best resource. Use books, published articles, journals, newspapers and magazines to research your chosen topic.

37 Color code them by topic, and use different-colored highlighters to mark the details so you can find each topic easily. Every time you note something down, write the bibliographical information, including the author, the book title, page numbers used, volume number, publisher’s name and date of publication.

After in-depth research, you can go on to write an outline. With all the notes and important information you’ve gathered, determine where each topic fits. 38

Finishing the outline, you can begin the first draft. 39 You can do more research if you feel like you’re lacking information. This is only the first draft, so you can still make changes as you go on.

Once you reread your first draft over and over and make the necessary changes you feel you should make, it is time to write your final draft. Make sure that all the vital information is included and that your writing makes sense and has a steady and natural flow all throughout.

40 At last, read the final version as many times as you want and even ask a friend or professor to read it too.

A. Then, do the research.

B. Next, be organized with your notes.

C. Simply note which parts will be the beginning, middle and end.

D. Once the question has been answered, you can begin constructing your essay.

E. Indeed, it requires thorough research and needs a few basic tips for it to be less challenging.

F. This is the part where you put more details into the paper so people can read it and actually understand it.

G. Check the spelling and grammatical errors, and every source you used is listed in the paper’s bibliography.

故填the。

at the age of+基数词意为:在几岁的时候。故填at。

故填to do。

Among so much proverbs, I like “The early bird catches worms” best.

This proverb means that to being successful, one needs to start early or before anyone else. It advises us seize the day and take every opportunity. That is why I liked it so much.

Looking back, I have come to realize that success is never goes to those who are lazy! Often the mostly successful people are those who do something before anyone else do. Success takes hard work and time. The early one wakes up, the more work time you will have and the more one will get.

Are you a early bird?

71.第一句,much改为many

72.第二句,being改为be

80.第九句,a改为an

由advise us可知此处为固定搭配,advise sb. to do sth.

为the most successful+名词。

early为元音音素开头,应用不定冠词an,故将a改为an。

I am terribly sorry that I won’t be able to keep my appointment to discuss Chinese calligraphy with you due to a change in my school arrangement. I sincerely apologize to you for my inconvenience caused by the unexpected change.

I suggest that we put our meeting off from 3pm this Saturday until the same time next Sunday. Will that be suitable to you? Fortunately, I’ve got the good news that an exhibition of Chinese calligraphy is scheduled to be held this weekend.

Works of some superb calligraphers of all times will be displayed in the exhibition then. It is strongly recommended that you should pay a visit to the exhibition, which will definitely help you better understand Chinese calligraphy.

Looking forward to you early reply.
