表语从句还是定语从句（来看一个典型题）

前段时间，群里有朋友问了一个很有意思的问题：

Is this research center ( ) you visited the modern equipment last year?

A.where B.where C.which D.whose

能不能直接选择B，看成是Is [this research center] where you visited the modern equipment last year? where引导的句子是表语从句？

说实话，一开始我并没有明白提问的朋友的意思，于是回答说：

这句话有两个写法：

Is this research center the one (in which = where) you visited the modern equipment last year?

或 Is this the research center (in which = where) you visited the modern equipment last year?

这里reserach center前面加不加the，关系重大，直接影响到这个句子的主语是this这一个代词，还是this reserach center这个名词短语。

提问的朋友发现疑惑并没有得到解答，就重复了一遍：我是想问能不能说Is this research center where...? 就好比Is our research center over there?

弄明白原来是问这个，我就有点犯愁了，毕竟，where引导的这个句子，好像的确可以当成一个副词来使用，那不就跟over there差不多嘛。但是，转念一想，我觉得还是不对。认真想想，我回答说：

表语从句一般来说都是名词性从句，而引导名词性从句的疑问词一般都是有实际意义、要表示疑问的，比如The problem is when we can get a pay rise.这句话里的when就实实在在表示“什么时候”。在我们讨论的这个句子里，where并不表示疑问，而是对于地点的确认。在这种情况下，只能把它当成定语从句来使用，而不能当成表语从句来使用。

比如，我们可以问：That is where we are going. 这里的where引导的就是表语从句。

到此，问题解决。

当然，这个句子是有问题的：you visited the modern equipment这个说法，我怎么看怎么不自然。须知modern equipment并非什么“先进设备”，modern这个词包括近现代两个时期，contemporary才表示“现代”；再说equipment，设备，这东西要“访问”或者“游览”，这合适吗？

要我说，这句话应该是you experimented with / used / tried out the latest equipment才对。
