产生画面感，是语言描述中最重要的事情。

描述一个人的外表听起来很简单，但能否正确系统地描述关键的身体细节和独特的特征是很困难的。

下面介绍写作的基本步骤：

Step 1 :

Identify them as male or female when appropriate.

识别性别

在很多情况下，这是显而易见的，并且很可能是你要注意的第一件事。然而，并不是每个人都符合这些类别，除非必要，通常最好不要做假设。

例如，如果你想向警察描述一个嫌疑犯，你可能会说：

“They looked like a man to me, but I can’t be certain.”

“在我看来，他们像个男人，但我不能肯定。”

Step 2 :

Take note of their skin color, and guess a race or ethnicity if needed.

You can stick to just describing the color of their skin, using terms like “olive,” “pale,”“dark brown,” and so on.

Step 3 :

Estimate their age range within 5 or 10 year increments.

Give their height either descriptively or by estimating.

If you only get a quick glimpse of someone, the best you’ll probably be able to do is put them in a general height category like “very tall, “tall,” “average,” “short,” or “very short.”

Step 5:

Describe their weight with terms like “thin,” “average,” and “large build.”

还应注意到不同国家不同文化的选词问题。

For instance, calling a woman “plump”is somewhat more polite in British English than American English, where it’s better to stick with “large” or perhaps “curvy.”

Step 6:

Mention their overall appearance as tactfully as possible.

例如：

把你觉得不好看的人称为“普通”“ordinary”or “plain,” 而不是 “普通”“ugly.”
