今天是农历七月半，也就是传说中的鬼节，也叫中元节或盂盆兰节，人们要扫墓，烧香，以缅怀祖先。

这几种说法大多都是根据“中元节”俗称的音译来表示的，然而假如你对外国人这么说，他们并不能从这些英文表达中知道“中元节”到底是做什么的，因此难免让人有些误解。
所以，正确的说法是什么呢？

在各大英文词典中，“中元节”的英文表达为：“Hungry Ghost Festival”，类似于西方的万圣节(All Saints" Day)和万圣夜(Halloween)。

今天是我们的中元节， 我们要拜祖先和祭奠鬼魂。
②. The Hungry Ghost Festival is celebrated on the 15th day ofthe seventh lunar month.

此外，还有一种外国人一听就懂得道说法：Chinese Hallowee
这就很好理解啦：我们都知道国外也有“鬼节”，也就是万圣节“Halloween”，如果你对老外说“Chinese Halloween”，他们也能够理解你说的是什么。
当然了，国外的万圣节要比我们的中元节热闹些，气氛也和我们的中元节大不相同。
中元节文化
中元节是道教的称法，同时也是一种民间说法。佛教称之为盂兰盆节。有些地方还翻译为饿鬼节，就是我们俗称的鬼节，又叫七月半，且被中国人认真看待。

知识补充：在中国文化中，人们认为所有的鬼都会在农历七月十五日从地狱里出来，所以这一天被称为鬼节，农历七月就是鬼月。

中元节的习俗
People will burn joss money or things like paper houses, cars and televisions to please the ghosts.
在中元节里，人们会烧纸钱，或纸房、纸车、纸电视来宽慰这些逝者。
Family members offer prayers to their deceased relatives, offer food and drink and burn hell bank notes and other forms of joss paper.
家庭成员向已故的亲人祈祷，送上祝福，奉上食物和饮料，烧一些诸如冥币这样的纸钱给他们。
Families will also pay tribute to other unknown wandering ghosts so that these homeless souls do not intrude on their lives or bring misfortune and bad luck.
