「国学与英语」“上善若水”怎么用英文表达

老子推崇“上善若水”，因为只有水处在所有人都不喜欢的低位，但却总是利于万物。正是因为像水这样不争，所以世界上才没有人能够与之抗争。

我们尝试用英文表达一下：

Lao Zi appreciated the “highest excellence like water” because water is only occupying the low place which all men dislike but always benefits all other things. It is because the water is free from striving that no one in the world is able to strive with it.

上善若水的英语表达是“highest excellence like water”。

《道德经》里说：“夫唯不争，故天下莫能与之争。”这里的“争”用strive比较好。争取某物：strive for，与某人去争：strive with sb. 有人问翕熹君，使用rat race可不可以呢？其实rat race是一个对“你死我活的竞争”的地道表达，但用在这里不太合适。因为道家讲的“争”不光是这种激烈的竞争，也有一般意义上的“争取”之意。而compete也不太合适，因为它表达的是“竞争”而不是“争取”。
