on 就是最常见的介词之一，on 开头的短语也非常多。英语中的介词使用非常频繁，正因为介词非常多，英语相对于汉语显得“平静”，有语言学家认为英语是“静态语言”，汉语是“动态语言”。看一个简单的例子：
他 端 着一杯咖啡，坐 在那儿。（俩动词）
He sat there with a cup of coffee in hand. （一个动词）
今天给大家找几个有用的 on 短语：
1. on display / on show ：展出，常做表语或后置定语
The paintings on display are mainly from Italy. 展出的油画大多来自意大利。
Lots of his works will be on show tomorrow. 他的很多作品明天展出。
2. on duty：值班
The policeman on duty refused to let him in. 值班警察拒绝他入内。
3. on the whole：总体来看，作状语
On the whole, He has been successful in this field. 整体上说，他在这个领域是成功的。
4. on fire：着火的
Smoke！Something is on fire. 烟！有东西着火了！
5. on purpose：故意的，常做状语
She dropped her handkerchief on purpose. 她故意丢下自己的手帕。
6. on the average：平均来说，作状语
He telephones me three times a day, on the average. 他平均一天给我打三个电话。
7. on any account：无论如何，作状语
Don"t make a promise，on any account. 无论如何，不要许诺。
8. on second thoughts：重新考虑
On second thoughts, I"d better finish moving the bricks first.
