Following和the（following语义大不一样）

没有定冠词的following+名词短语，涵义是after, in repsponse to或者as a result of, 如

【例句1】Following the bad election results of May 8th, the Prime Minister has appointed three new ministers. (继5月8日糟糕的选举结果之后，首相任命了三名新部长)

【例句2】Following a general strike in 1933, he fled the country and went to South America. （在1933年的总罢工之后，他逃离了这个国家，前往南美洲。）

这个无冠词following其实是动词follow的现在分词。

有定冠词的the following +名词短语，涵义是the next，如，

【例句3】They only stayed at the hotel one night and left early the following morning. (他们只在酒店住了一晚，第二天早上就离开了。)

【例句4】We went out on the boat. The sea was really rough and the following hour was the worst in my short life.( 我们乘船出去了。 大海真的很汹涌，接下来的一个小时是我短暂一生中最糟糕的时刻。)

The following中的following是形容词，含义是“下一个，紧随的”。

也可以用the following(不带名词)引导人或物的列表，如，

【例句5】I’m afraid I can’t eat any of the following: tomatoes, cucumber, onions and cabbage. （恐怕以下的这些菜， 我都不能吃：西红柿、黄瓜、洋葱和卷心

【例句6】The following have helped me with this book of photographs: David Jones, Gill Farmer, Martin Weekes and Anthony Gray. (下面的这些人员对这本摄影集的帮助很大：大卫·琼斯、吉尔·法默、马丁·威克斯和安东尼·格雷。）

此种用法的the following是形容词变名词，就如同the rich, the poor。形容词加定冠词表达的名词，是将符合相应形容词特性的所有对象概括成一体，所以形式上不再用(能)加s表复数了。然而，它在逻辑上可以是复数，就如同【例句6】中the following HAVE。
