走进英文诗歌（寻找生活的意义）

在书店里买了本《How to teach your child to read Shakespeare》——如何教会你的孩子读莎士比亚。莎士比亚的诗在西方人心中的地位是非常高的，作者在书中提到有一种焦虑是东西方人民共同拥有的：很担心咱们在遇到壮观的景象的时候只会脱口而出：艾玛太尼玛壮观了！牛叉！而咱们的老祖先，却能留下“大漠孤烟直，长河落日圆”这样的名句。

可见提升自己的文化素养非常重要。不知道大家还记不记得，之前在暑假里开过三次讲莎士比亚十四行诗的直播课，当时我也说啦，莎士比亚的诗里面用了大量了古英语，就相当于咱们古汉语中的之乎者也，没有专门学过是完全看不明白的，所以有没有稍微平易近人一点点的英文诗歌呢？

当然有啦，甚至有些英文诗还被改编成了中文歌曲，比如诗人叶芝的《当你老了》：

When you are old 当你老了

When you are old and grey and full of sleep, 当你老了，头发花白，睡意沉沉，

And nodding by the fire，take down this book, 倦坐在炉边，取下这本书来，

And slowly read, and dream of the soft look 慢慢读着，追梦当年的眼神

Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; 你那柔美的神采与深幽的晕影。

How many loved your moments of glad grace, 多少人爱过你昙花一现的身影，

And loved your beauty with love false or true, 爱过你的美貌，以虚伪或真情，

But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you 惟独一人曾爱你那朝圣者的心，

And loved the sorrows of your changing face; 爱你哀戚的脸上岁月的留痕。

And bending down beside the glowing bars, 在炉罩边低眉弯腰，

And paced upon the mountains overhead 爱情是怎样逝去，又怎样步上群山，

And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. 怎样在繁星之间藏住了脸。

说到英文诗，不得不提的一个人就是博尔赫斯，这个名字对于同学们来说也许还比较陌生，但如果你热爱文学的话，他的散文和诗歌就如同一座巨大的宝藏。

在晚年他担任了阿根廷国立图书馆的馆长，那时他几近失明，对此他自嘲说：“命运赐予我80万册书，由我掌管，同时却又给了我黑暗。”对于这段经历，他的描述也如同诗歌一般优美：因为我发现我是在逐渐失明，所以我并没有什么特别沮丧的时刻。它像夏日的黄昏徐徐降临。那时我是国家图书馆馆长，我开始发现我被包围在没有文字的书籍之中。然后我朋友们的面孔消失了。然后我发现镜子里已空无一人。再以后东西开始模糊不清。

博尔赫斯的诗歌感情非常浓郁，比喻和隐喻也很多，不同于叶芝的温婉含蓄，反而是我非常喜欢的风格。

最喜欢的一首是：《我用什么才能留住你？》——What can I hold you with?

I offer you lean streets, desperate sunsets, the moon of the jagged suburbs.

I offer you the bitterness of a man who has looked long and long at the lonely moon.

我给你瘦落的街道、绝望的落日、荒郊的月亮。

我给你一个久久地望着孤月的人的悲哀。

I offer you the loyalty of a man who has never been loyal.

I offer you that kernel of myself that I have saved somehow -the central heart that deals not in words, traffics not with dreams and is untouched by time, by joy, by adversities.

我给你一个从未有过信仰的人的忠诚。

我给你我设法保全的我自己的核心——不营字造句，不和梦交易，不被时间、欢乐和逆境触动的核心。

I offer you the memory of a yellow rose seen at sunset, years before you were born.

I offer you explanations of yourself, theories about yourself, authentic and surprising news of yourself.

I can give you my loneliness, my darkness, the hunger of my heart; I am trying to bribe you with uncertainty, with danger, with defeat.

我给你早在你出生前多年的一个傍晚看到的一朵黄玫瑰的记忆。

我给你关于你生命的诠释，关于你自己的理论，你的真实而惊人的存在。

我给你我的寂寞、我的黑暗、我心的饥渴；我试图用困惑、危险、失败来打动你。

与博尔赫斯文风相似的还有法国诗人波德莱尔：

Perhaps we will miss each other eventually, but you should know I had been enamored of you. My mind never remains for anyone while my heart will be moved by somebody.

也许你我终将行踪不明

但是你该知道我曾因你动心

我的心思不为谁而停留

而心总要为谁而跳动

在电影《死亡诗社》的最后，罗宾·威廉姆斯说了这样一句话，我想这句话就是关于我们为什么要读诗的最好解释了：我们读诗写诗，并不是因为它好玩，我们读诗写诗是因为我们是人类的一份子，而人类是充满激情的。没错，医学、法律、商业、工程，这些都是崇高的追求，足以支撑人的一生，但诗歌，美丽，浪漫，爱情……这些才是我们生活的意义。

We don"t read and write poetry because it"s cute, We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race，And the human race is filled with passion，Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry...beauty, romance, love...these are what we stay alive for.
